The Best Of Both Worlds With A Touch Of Egyptian Grandeur: Introducing The New ANDERSEN Genève x Edward Sexton Quotidiana Only Watch 2021
Editor’s note: For nearly a decade now we have curiously anticipated the Only Watch Auction. The 2021 edition doesn’t disappoint! While watches earlier this year had a green theme, this year’s Auction watches seem to have an orange theme. Following the releases from Watches & Wonders 2021, today we present the new ANDERSEN Genève x Edward Sexton Quotidiana Only Watch 2021. Here’s our preview and the Gut Reaction Review (Grr…). For our standard detailed hands-on reviews, please head to our dedicated reviews section here.
This is our first time covering ANDERSEN Genève. And I haven’t had any experience with the celebrated London Saville Row tailor Edward Sexton either. But so impressed I am with their collaboration that I would be following both with earnest from now on.
The new ANDERSEN Genève x Edward Sexton Quotidiana Only Watch 2021 to put it simply is absolutely divine. Full of Breguet influences, it’s one of the most elegant timepieces to come out of this year’s auction catalogue.
From the get-go, the rather rare execution of the day-date compilation is the star. True, the guillochéd dial is the obvious charm, but this highly symmetric and balanced composition of the day-date complication takes the cake.
The watch features a white gold “Losanges Magiques” (magic lozenge) hand-guillochéd dial with two windows. The darker blue — 21 ct. BlueGold — 12’o clock aperture displays days of the week, while the lighter blue aperture at 6 displays the date.
One of the most striking features is the use of Edward Sexton’s needle-and-thread signature at 12.
The red and white gold fluted case offers a very wearable 40mm diameter and 9mm thickness. The watch comes on a hand-stitched blue leather strap with a red-gold buckle.
Superbly finished, the new ANDERSEN Genève x Edward Sexton Quotidiana Only Watch 2021 is a revelation.
ANDERSEN Genève has been creating high-end timepieces for collectors for over 40 years and a majority of the brand’s work is bespoke or pièce unique. Edward Sexton has been a legendary name on the famed Savile Row since 1969.
In regards to the charity, 54 brands are participating this year for the 9th edition — the first one was in 2005 — of the biennial charity auction Only Watch, whose aim is to raise funds for research against Duchenne muscular dystrophy. This auction has raised more than 70 million Euros — the 2019 edition raised CHF 38’593’000 — so far and has enabled scientists to continue their research.
The lots will go on a small world tour — unfortunately, and surprise surprise, Australia is not a part of it — and then auctioned in collaboration with Christie’s on 6 November 2021, at 2pm (Geneva time), at the Four Seasons Hôtel des Bergues.
The apparent — from a majority of the releases across the 54 brands — albeit unofficial orange theme for this year’s Only Watch Auction is missing.
But there is a bespoke experience attached to this particular release: the winning bidder will also be offered a “made-to-measure” suit, made in London by Edward Sexton.
The features a Frédéric Piguet 11.50 — or Blancpain Cal. 1150 — double barrel automatic movement, with 18ct yellow gold rotor decorated with “graine d’orge” (barley grain) hand guillochéd pattern.
This 26.20 x 3.25mm movement is used widely by brands such as Blancpain and Breguet, and its variation the FP 11.521 or. Breguet 517GG is also present in my personal Breguet Marine Big Date 5817ST. The FP movement in the Breguet 5817ST is one of the smoothest I have used, so rest assured, the Frédéric Piguet 11.50 used in the new ANDERSEN Genève x Edward Sexton Quotidiana Only Watch 2021 is both premium and should tick to satisfaction. It is also adjusted in five positions.
The generic movement beats at the frequency of 3Hz (21,600 A/h), features 28 jewels and 210 parts, and provides a very welcome 100-hour power reserve. The ANDERSEN Genève timepiece has a 72-hour power reserve.
For connoisseurs who appreciate in-house movements, it is worthwhile to note that the day-date mechanism has been developed and manufactured in-house.
That’s All Folks!
One of the best part about covering events such as the Only Watch auction is the opportunity to discover new and exciting timepieces. The ANDERSEN Genève watch has definitely piqued my interest.
There is also something Egyptian about it, lending it an air of mystery and timeless soul. The pyramidical design of the rotor, the pointy skeletonised hands, and the guilloche dial pattern, all hark back to the same Egyptian vibe.
The three zones divided dial, the “A” shaped ANDERSEN Genève hands in red gold, the guilloche and the rotor decoration all provide an irresistible charm.
With eclectic and futuristic watches like the new MB&F HM10 Panda, the Quotidiana takes things back to basics where elegance reigns and sophistication is the order of the day.
