Revisiting: Top 3 A. Lange & Söhne 2019 novelties

A. Lange & Söhne had a busy 2019. Not only did they announce five novelties at the beginning of the year but also wrapped the year up with the stunning Odysseus

While we wait for their new 2020 releases, let’s have a refresher of top 3 A. Lange & Söhne 2019 novelties: Datograph Perpetual Tourbillon, Zeitwerk Date, and the LANGE 1 “25th Anniversary”.

DATOGRAPH PERPETUAL TOURBILLON

It’s not very often that I swoon over the dial colour of a watch. But the salmon, or as the brand describes it, the unique pink gold dial is surprisingly mesmerising to the point of hypnotisation. Add to this the plethora of complications that adorn this beautiful dial face: flyback chronograph, tachymetre scale, perpetual calendar with moon-phases, a tourbillon with stop seconds, a power-reserve indicator and of-course the oversized date. The Maison has presented with a release that’s worthy of any praise that comes its way.

Quick Tech Specs: The reference 740.056 produced in limited numbers of 100 features the calibre L952.2 which is a manual-winding manufacture movement. The movement features 729 components, comprises of 59 jewels, beats at the low frequency of 2.5Hz (18’000 A/h) and is encased inside a 41.5mm diameter and 14.6mm thick white gold case. The watch offers a decent 50-hour power reserve.

Watch Ya Gonna Do About It: What you have here ladies and gentlemen is a watch with little competition.

ZEITWERK DATE

From the day it was launched, we have always admired the unique time display of the ZEITWERK collection. The ZEITWERK collection is known for its innovative digital time display system as it was the first mechanical wristwatch with constant-force escapement and precise jumping digital display that indicated the hour and minute with jumping numerals. This latest model features that same quality and adds an unique peripheral date. Released last year to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the ZEITWERK collection in the A. Lange & Söhne universe of fine watchmaking, the ZEITWERK DATE is the brand’s first mechanical wristwatch with an additional function of a peripheral date display in the form of a glass ring that shows the current date in red. To simply explain how the dial is operated: the crown at 2’o clock is used for winding the watch and setting the time, a button at 4’o clock is used for correcting the hours and the corrector at 8’o clock is used for correcting the date display.

Quick Tech Specs: The reference 148.038 features the calibre L043.8 which is a manual-winding manufacture movement. The movement features 516 components, comprises of 70 jewels, beats at the low frequency of 2.5Hz (18’000 A/h) and is encased inside a 44.2mm diameter and 12.3mm thick white gold case. The watch face shows the functions of hours and minutes that are indicated with jumping numerals at 9 and 3’o clock respectively, subsidiary seconds with stop seconds at 6’o clock, a peripheral ring date, and a power-reserve indicator at 12’o clock below the branding. The watch offers a much improved 72-hour power reserve.

Watch Ya Gonna Do About It: The solid silver and grey dial, rhodiumed German silver time bridge, rhodiumed gold hands and the white gold case present a luxury watch that’s a fine example of understated elegance. And the red of the date indicator together with the red tip of the power reserve indicator add a quiet playfulness to the dial.

LANGE 1 “25th Anniversary”

In October 1994, A. Lange & Söhne came back from the dead and introduced the LANGE 1. Immediately iconic for its asymmetric dial layout and oversized date display, this watch has become emblematic of the brand over the last 25 years. To commemorate its success, A. Lange & Söhne released the latest version, the LANGE 1 “25th Anniversary” in January last year at the SIHH 2019. Limited to 250 pieces, this white gold version features an argenté-coloured dial in solid silver with printed deep-blue numerals and hour markers, blue date numerals, and a colour-coordinated blue alligator leather strap with a grey seam. The hinged cuvette crafted from solid white gold on the reverse with an engraving of Lange’s headquarters and the hand decorated Geneva stripes movement are both impressive works of art.

Quick Tech Specs: The reference 191.066 features the calibre L121.1 which is a manual-winding manufacture movement. The movement features 368 components, comprises of 43 jewels, beats at the frequency of 3Hz (21’600 A/h) and is encased inside a 38.5mm diameter and 10.7mm thick white gold case. The watch face shows the functions of hours & minutes off-centered at 9’o clock, seconds off-centered at 5’o clock, a power-reserve indicator at 3’o clock and a jumping Lange outsize date at 1’o clock. The watch offers an impressive 72-hour power reserve.

Watch Ya Gonna Do About It: Above all, the small size of 38.5×10.7mm diameter enhancing its daily wearability combined with the elegance of the dial makes this a must have for any watch collector.

Keep tuned as we will be featuring a lot more of A. Lange & Söhne this month.
