Emmy winning British actor and two-time Academy Award nominee Benedict Cumberbatch channels his stylish powers to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He wears the Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris Mariner Memovox.

The Memovox has been in Jaeger-LeCoultre’s roster since 1950, and has seen many a facelift. In 1956, Jaeger-LeCoultre further developed this Memovox line by introducing the first automatic watch in the collection.

It’s revamped look in the way of the Memovox Polaris model came in 1968, and that has since inspired new Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris collection that we talk about here. Memovox’s architecture is defined by very sober and classic lines, and the original manually wound mechanical watch version sets itself apart with an additional crown to control the alarm function.

It was so popular and cool that the Swiss authorities of the Canton of Vaud, where the Jaeger-LeCoultre Manufacture is located, selected this as a gift for Charlie Chaplin in 1953. And it is so cool even now, that Jaeger-LeCoultre has released a short film In A Breath in collaboration with Benedict Cumberbatch.

The latest Polaris Mariner Memovox as worn by Benedict Cumberbatch when he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame this February was first announced back in October 2020.

This latest Jaeger-LeCoultre Polaris Mariner Memovox ref. Q9038180 is a handsome timepiece with an array of finishes on the dial: a gradient blue sun-rayed dial features both grained and opaline finishes, adding to the watch a touch of elegance and sportiness.
Retailing for 26’700 AUD, this watch worn by Benedict Cumberbatch is available as a 42mm x 15.63mm stainless steel cased beauty with 300m water-resistance.

Powering it is the automatic mechanical movement Jaeger-LeCoultre Caliber 956AA. It is a very similar movement that was seen as early as 2011 when JLC paid tribute to its Deepsea model from 1959 and presented it in a limited series re-edition.
The 7.47mm thick Jaeger-LeCoultre Caliber 956AA features 271 components and 24 jewels, beats at the frequency of 4Hz, and provides with a 44-hour power reserve.

So it turns out that there is a fair bit in common between Charlie Chaplain and Benedict Cumberbatch after all: both are British, both well known actors, and both have an association with the Jaeger-LeCoultre Memovox.
