Big Bang For Your Buck: Introducing The New Certina DS Action Diver 43mm

Editor’s Note: Need a quick watch fix? This preview of the new Certina DS Action Diver is a GET TO THE POINT (GTTP) review with all the info you want / need to know QUICK. For our actual hands-on reviews, please head to the dedicated section here. Now let’s get to the point.

What Is It

The new Certina DS Action Diver comes packaged as a 43mm diameter and 13.1mm thick diver with six colour options — black, blue, green, titanium or bi-colour looks — to choose from.

Inside the new DS Action Diver ticks the same automatic movement as found in the latest DS-2, the ETA Powermatic 80.611 featuring 23 jewels and beating at the low frequency of 3Hz. It is used extensively in Swatch’s other brand Tissot, and for the peace of mind for our readers, it is a well trusted and decent movement.

The ETA Powermatic 80.611 is a 25.6mm diameter and 4.6mm thick movement with an improved spring barrel that is based on the ETA C07.111 (which in turn is based on the stock-standard and widely used ETA 2824-2 with a much lower power reserve and higher 4Hz frequency).

Why

Because the watch industry can always have more dive watches. And because watch enthusiasts need a good value for money deal (not from just micro-brands) now and then.

When & Where

First announced on 1st February alongside the new Certina DS-2 and should be available a bit later in the month from authorised Certina dealers.

How Does The Certina DS Action Diver Do

For the low price starting at only 880 CHF (~ 1’330 AUD), one gets a Swiss watch with an automatic movement featuring an impressive 80-hour power reserve and NivachronTM balance springs, diving ready specs with 300m water-resistance in accordance with ISO 6425, and a more durable (than aluminium) ceramic bezel with a unidirectional rotating bezel in convex black ceramic with dive time scale and Super-LumiNova® marking.

One thing to keep in mind is that the new Certina DS Action Diver with roughly 50mm lug-to-lug spacing is not for those with slim wrists.

With classic dive watch looks, a reliable movement, a highly legible varnished in black dial, hands and indexes with Super-LumiNova® coating, screw-in case back, screw-down and protected crown, and a stainless steel bracelet with a secure folding clasp (with two pushers and diver’s extension), the new Certina DS Action Diver 43mm is ready for action.
