Sneak Peek: Girard-Perregaux Quasar Light in sapphire

The 2020 Girard-Perregaux Quasar Light in a unique sapphire case (reference: 99295-43-001-BA6A) features the brand’s iconic ‘Three Golden Bridges’ in a new twist with a beast of a tourbillon movement.

The movement — GP09400-1128 — used is a self-winding mechanical movement and comprises of 260 components & beats at the low frequency of 3Hz (21’600 A/h) allowing for a good (minimum) 60 hour power reserve.

The dial shows the functions of hours, minutes, small seconds, and a hours, tourbillon on a transparent dial.

The ‘Dauphine’ type white gold hands are skeletonized and filled with luminescent material. (Please see our detailed review here for more info).

The case-back is what Girard-Perregaux calls sapphire crystal ‘box, and is essentially a window to see the beauty of the movement.

It comes on a grey fabric strap with a metallic effect and hand-stitching.

The water resistance is a low — 30m (3 ATM) — on this one. This means it is not recommended for swimming or showering. You can perhaps wash your hands with it on though, but for its cost, we wouldn’t risk it.

Cost of these watches: 294’000 USD.

Watch Ya Gonna Do About It?

In terms of use, we would say it is not a daily wearer or a sports watch. Given it’s a mammoth 46mm diameter in size and comes in at 15.25mm thickness, it’s not a dress watch either and perhaps even too loud for a formal occasion. It is obviously not going to fit perfectly under the cuff for that boardroom meeting. It is not really designed to be worn over with weekend with jeans and t-shirt as well. It would however look amazing at a collector’s exclusive showing or at a high-end party.
